How It Works: Determining Location

WiFi Positioning

The Loki functionality is based on Skyhook Wireless WiFi Positioning System (WPS) which uses WiFi access points to triangulate a user's location. With WPS operating to determine and publish the user's latitude/longitude, street, address, zip code, city, state or general geographic area, the Loki users can efficiently and effectively use that location to quickly find the most and accurate information.

  • WPS listens for WiFi access points
  • Loki user clicks for example the Yahoo! Traffic button
  • WPS posts identified WiFi access points to centralized server
  • Server returns computed location based on access point triangulation
  • Loki present the Yahoo! Traffic map of the user's immediate area

WPS is able to make an accurate determination of your location within our coverage area - as long as you have an active WiFi enabled device - because there are literally millions and millions of active WiFi access points in the US. Since we have mapped the location of these access points, we can then use the signals of those access points * to then triangulate your position.

It's all about geometry, baby.

Triangulating

The more access points WPS hears, the better...and if you're in a typical city, that can mean anywhere between 6 and 20 at any given time.

User Location Tuning

One of the core principles behind Loki is the ability to deliver web content and information that is relevant and personal to YOU. So we also allow you to fine-tune your position in those instances where IP Address Positioning has not been able to pinpoint your location.

Select the
Search
and a User Location Tuning window will pop up.
Location Tuning
Enter the street address of your current location, click on the correct address Loki matched with your entry and now you can experience all benefits of Loki's precise geo-targeting capabilities! Your version of Loki will 'match' your defined location with the WiFi access points in the immediate area and be able to pinpoint you every time you come back.

Gosh, we really ARE making the web all about you, aren't we? Makes our Moms pretty darned proud.
